Senior Night Tribute
Tuesday, October 16 vs. Ogden HS
"Leaders don't create followers; they create more leaders." - Tom Peters
Here are a bunch of Seniors who have made the year outstanding. I haven't coached a group this lively and have enjoyed my time with them; they have made it a pleasure. These five Seniors have worked hard to achieve the goals that they have set for themselves. They have been reliable on the court and off. This year has been success mostly due to the example, dedication, and leadership of these young ladies. I have been impressed with their friendship, even under pressure, and their inclusion of the younger athletes. They are truly ladies with positive individual qualities--each being strong attributing members to the working dynamic of our team. They make good choices in life and keep a high standard. Great job, and we coaches will always remember the Granstville High School 2012 volleyball season for the dedication the Seniors have given to jump start the program's successes.

2012 TEAM Day
Each year, the Granstville Volleyball Team does a T.E.A.M
day--in two parts. Part one consists of
a service project where we look outside our gym and find needs in the
community. Part two has some fun
bonding/learning time all together as a team.
We wanted to spend some time in both Grantsville elementary schools promoting reading to the younger students. For about a half hour we read to them in their classroom and gave them bookmarks saying, "GHS Volleyball digs reading," with our team photo on it on one side and on the other side explaining that sports exercises the body and reading exercises the mind. It was great working with the children, and we coaches really enjoyed watching the volleyball players interact with them. After the bell rang, we became teacher/faculty aids for the afternoon. We did a variety of stapling, copying, organizing, laminating, sorting, tearing, and even scrubbing the floors. Good teachers are always in need of help. They work very hard and for many hours outside of the normal work day. We wanted to take a little load off by serving them with whatever they needed. It was a great day, and the girls were very cheerful and hard-working! Here were the responses we got from the principals:
The next morning we loaded up and hit a BYU volleyball
match. Amongst the enjoyment of watching
a fun game, the players were given learning assignments per say. According to their report back, they caught
on. Following the game and with very
empty bellies, we headed to the PIE Cafe--"all you can eat" was taken
literally by some players!

help us last Friday! You guys were TERRIFIC
and we really
appreciate your help—especially with my magnet board!! You are welcome any time!!!" - Jeff
"The
kids loved it!!! Thank-you for thinking of us." - JoAn

Coach's Corner: Davis Tourney JV Report
The Davis Tournament was a really good learning experience for the girls. We played a lot of matches and learned a lot of things that we can improve upon this season. By the end of the tournament the girls were starting to work together really well. The most important thing that they learned and improved upon this tournament was the importance of talking. It may have taken them till the last match, but I don't think I have ever heard them talk so much or so loudly as the last few games!

Coach's Corner: Onward to Region
Region play begins tomorrow with a tough opener against Morgan. The Varisty played consistently well last night in our game against Wasatch. Great team work and goal-oriented play is ocurring, which will continue to bring success.
To point out some leadership playing during the pre-season matches, I want to recognize Turner as leader of the team with highest kill average, getting about 12 a game. Christensen closely follows with averaging 10. Those kills couldn't occur without Conrads assists and the team's passing and ball control. Matthews, Davis, and Cloward play a big role in that. Hale has the high serving percentage. Great job Grantsville gals! Keep our goals in sight, onward as we fight :). GO COWBOYS!!

Dixie Fly High Tourney Outcome
The Grantsville Volleyball team represented well at the tournament on Aug. 17-19, ranking quite a bit higher than we have for the past few years. After a successful couple of wins the first night of pool play, we were placed in the Gold Division. We fought hard through a tough morning of pool play, and then started the afternoon single elimination tournament in the silver bracket. There were 6 teams placed in each bracket from Gold to Copper. In the end we ranked roughly 10th out of 24 teams in the tournament. Good first group of competitions Cowboys!

SLCC Camp
COACH'S CORNER: We had a successful week at SLCC. It was a 3 day combination camp of skills training and team play. I saw a good deal of improvement in everyone individually and how the team "talks" and works together on the court. The hussle has also gotten better. Way to go! We need to keep working hard this Summer in preparation for a successful 2012 season and build upon what we've learned this week. -Coach O
